Google (GOOG) Needs a Better Android Model Before It's Too Late
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) may want to protect its Android operating system and app market before other companies, such as Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Facebook, and HTC, come in and steal their market share with its own system.
Techcrunch notes how Amazon's kindle tablet still uses the Android operating as their basis, but doesn't use any of Google's other products besides for its search engine. Amazon is attempting to gain a large market share in the tablet industry from Apple (Nasdaq: APPL), who is currently the dominate leader in the industry, and is also looking steal market share from Google in the Android App market.
Kindle Fire users can attempt to access Google's market.android.com, but will never reach it as Amazon's kindle will continue to redirect the user to its own Android app store. Techcrunch feels this is a direct assault on Google and believes more companies may also follow Amazon's model if Google continues to allow it to happen and continues to offer its Android operating system for anyone to use and redesign. If Amazon were to partner with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) for use of its Bing search engine, Google would find itself not reaping any benefits from the sale of a Kindle.
The fact that Google wouldn't be able to see any return or wouldn't gain anything from the sale of a Kindle means a lot since the Kindle Fire is expected to be the top selling Android based tablet on the market. Facebook may look to copy Amazon's play in the smartphone industry with its rumored new smartphone which has not been officially announced yet.
Although Google is looking to use its Android system to flood the market and gain dominate market share, in the long-run it may prove to be a wrong move when they stop receiving benefits from it. The tech market remains extremely competitive and will continue to be well into the future. It seems Amazon has already taken the gloves off and it seems if Google's management team doesn't keep its head up, their open model on their Android system may knock them out of the tablet market altogether.
