Google (GOOG) Begins To Monetize Google Finance....Good or Bad?

November 17, 2008 5:27 PM EST

For the first time, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has just started placing ads on its popular Google Finance site. Google Finance has been in beta for 2 years and has grown in popularity through bloggers and web savvy users. Although, Google Finance receives approximately 10% of the traffic Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) Finance receives, it still is one of the most popular financial portals.

Google has never monetized its Google Finance site. Perhaps, Google made this move today because advertising revenues have slowed in other areas, such as autos. Or, Google realizes it now has built up a loyal user base to its finance site and now is an opportune time to introduce financial related ads.

Whatever the case may be, the Google Finance site will definitely add much needed revenues to Google, which should help shore up any losses in other divisions hurt by the weak advertising market.

Here is a link to the full-size screen shot of the new Google Finance page.

In the age of adsense and rampant ad-blindness, I didn't even notice it was there. Only after reading this article did I realize that was I saw wasn't actually unused space filled with hyper-colored gibberish and some meaningless roman characters.

Monetize Google Finance?

What a terrible idea!!! I say keep the main page add-free but let the ads run on other pages. What an eye-sore....
