Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) shares are trending higher Monday amid new data showing the company is making headway against one of its largest rivals in the realm of Internet browsers.

According to StatCounter, Google's Chrome browser moved ahead of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer for the first time last week. The results are definitive: compared to a 44 percent market share in the same period last year, IE now has about 32 percent global market share, while Chrome moved up from 19.4 percent to 32.8 percent last week.

Despite the positive news for Google. two other browser-followers, Clicky and W3Counter, say Chrome isn't number one...yet. Just about every other site sees the same trend happening, with Chrome continuing to gain gobs of share.
