Semiconductor sales expectations are getting a bit of a haircut Thursday.
Research firm Gartner (NYSE: IT) said it expects global revs in 2012 to reach $309 billion, a 2.2 percent compared to the current 2011 estimate. The number is down from expected 2012 growth of 4.6 percent issued in the third quarter.
Gartner also slashed its PC production growth outlook for 2012 from an expected 10.1 percent to just 5.0 percent. The dramatically reduced outlook stems from the recent Thailand floods, which have hampered hard disk drive production. Coupled with a weaker economic outlook, PC sales will face an uphill battle marching into 2012.
Gartner sees mobile phone production unit growth up slightly for 2012 from 7 percent to 7.5 percent. The firm's media tablet production forecast was lowered from 110 million to 107 million, although this is still a 63 percent increase from 2011. Gartner analysts believe as smartphones ramp up in volume, they will dominate 2012 semiconductor growth.
