Former Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Ballmer Unsure When He'll Step Down as Director

March 24, 2014 11:17 AM EDT
Former Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer may not be running the company, but he still has a say in the game with his 4 percent stake and board seat. However, one of those things might change sooner rather than later.

During an interview last week, Ballmer commented that he's not sure how long he'll stay on the board of directors at Microsoft, a company he ran for 14 years. It really as much as anything depends on how I see rest of my life playing out, the executive noted.

Ballmer was also quieter in the board room with the company's meeting ealier this month. I didn’t talk like I did when I was CEO, he said.

Ballmer also believes that CEO Satya Nadella is doing a great job.

Of course, Nadella isn't flying solo right now and probably won't anytime soon. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is still very involved in the company and hasn't aired plans to do otherwise. His new role is technology advisor along with being a board member and the largest individual shareholder. Like Gates, Ballmer has a large stake along with a familial connection to the company and its unlikely he'll retire from the board within the next few years or until he's comfortable that Microsoft's trajectory is the right one.

Shares of Microsoft are down 0.5 percent.
