Former Congressman Anthony Weiner Curses Luck as Facebook (FB) Unveils Self Destructing Messages
Tweet Send to a Friend
On Friday, Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) released a new app that could have changed the fate of former congressman Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after admitting he sent revealing photos to strangers via twitter.
The new app, call Facebook Poke, allows users to send messages, pokes, photos and 10-second videos. The messages "self destruct" in less than 10 seconds, and cannot be retrieved, which of course means the app is perfect for sending nude photos and other smut, but it can also be used for sending playful messages to friends and family.
The new apps is an imitation of Snapchat and is viewed by many as a great upgrade to the classic "poke", which was sort of like a wink. With embedded photos and video, Facebook Poke will likely deliver countless seconds of viewing heaven, or in the case of a certain naked congressmen, it might feel more like a fast, sharp stick in the eye.
Facebook's new Poke app is already one of the most popular free apps at Apple's App Store. It is currently number three behind Google Maps and ElfYourself.
