Facebok (Nasdaq: FB) is said to be rolling out an application for Google Android that would be lighter than its usual app for the platform.
TechCrunch noted that the new app will be called Facebook Lite. The app is being introduced in emerging markets like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Zimbabwe, and others.
Facebook Lite will work better for users who use wireless networks of 2G or lower, or on poor Internet connections.
There is no certainty that a wider launch will happen and Facebook might cancel the project if its finds that it isn't worth pursuing.
With smartphone sales surging in Southeast Asia and India, Facebook is trying to stay ahead of the game with its reworked app.
Shares of Facebook are positive in early trading.
