Facebook (FB) Mimics Peers, Orders Storage Products Directly from ODMs

January 3, 2013 6:47 AM EST
Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) may be looking to go directly to the source for storage capacity.

According to Digitimes on Thursday, Facebook is said to have placed orders for new storage products with upstream ODMs. The orders were said to be placed with ODMs like Wistron and Quanta Computer.

Facebook is making the move in accordance with its Open Compute Project (OCP), skipping over vendors in the process.

Names like Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), and Google (Nasdaq; GOOG) have made similar orders recently. Google fully outsources its storage product orders, while Amazon has about 30 percent directly placed with ODMs.

Facebok is indicated for a lower open Thursday following a 5.2 percent rise on Wednesday.
