Early Data Shows Microsoft's (MSFT) Bing Has Taken Over 2nd Search Slot From Yahoo! (YHOO)

Data from StatCounter showed that Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) new search engine Bing has passed Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) as the number two search engine in the U.S. and globally Thursday, taking market share from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

StatCounter showed that in the U.S. Bing leapfrogged Yahoo to take second place with 16.28%. Yahoo! has 10.22%. Google still commands the US search engine market with 71.47%.  StatCounter data globally finds that Bing at 5.62% has taken a narrow lead over Yahoo! (5.13%). Google worldwide retains 87.62% of the market.

Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter, said, "It remains to be seen if Bing falls away after the initial novelty and promotion but at first sight it looks like Microsoft is on to a winner."

StreetInsider.com's tech team can confirm the interest from Bing.  Bing has nearly matched Yahoo! as the second largest sender of our search engine traffic. Microsoft's Live was always a distant third.  Of course, Google still dominates.

If MSFT's Bing can maintain and grow this traffic it could force Yahoo! to the table to complete a search deal. Yahoo!'s CEO Carol Bartz could be eating crow for her latest off-the-cuff remark that "selling search to Microsoft would be like Microsoft selling Office to me."
