Disney (DIS) Off 2% On 'Rogue One' Extended Shooting; An Opportunity?

June 1, 2016 11:22 AM EDT

Shares of Disney (NYSE: DIS) are trading off (-1%) for a second day on concerns over a re-shoot of Star Wars: Rogue One scenes that were supposedly completed when initial shooting concluded in February '16. However, this may be an opportunity rather than a threat. Supposedly, Rogue One felt more like a war film and lacked the tone of the original Star Wars: A New Hope. Since this film concludes shortly before A New Hope begins, the tone has to be exact.

Perhaps more importantly, the cost overruns are likely to be nominal. According to Variety, "Reshoots or additional shooting are practically a given in this decade of tentpole comic book, fantasy and sci-fi moviemaking. The films are massive productions, filled with so much green-screen and fit together in a way that, more often than not, demands for shooting to fill in holes or clarify plots. Even acting deals have the shoots in mind when contracts call for “run of show” appearances, which include not just shooting anytime during production but even during postproduction". A studio exec was quoted as saying “Anything less than extraordinary won’t do,” and extraordinary is required to top the $2 billion in box office proceeds earned by the last film.
