BlackBerry (BBRY) CEO Chen Compares Himself to Steve Jobs (AAPL)

March 10, 2014 11:36 AM EDT
BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) CEO John Chen has a lot on his plate and has been refreshingly down to earth about his company's chances to complete a turnaround.

Chen did an interview with the New York Times late last week. In part, the executive compared himself to the late Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) co-founder Steve Jobs: I watched Steve Jobs on YouTube, when he came back to Apple ... He got up and said, ‘I don’t have a new product, I’m insanely focused on my customer base.’ That’s me now.

While Chen might have the best of intentions, comparing himself to Steve Jobs might be a little stretch. The company is now going after government and enterprise contracts, a much more difficult series of environments to gain a foothold in given different requirements and higher-standards necessary to meet security and performance measures.

Still, BlackBerry isn't starting from scratch, but it might need to become a little more innovative if its wants to make a dent it is target market.

Shares of BlackBerry are down 0.1 percent.
