BlackBerry (BBRY) Affirms Cutting Jobs at Waterloo, Sunrise Locations

BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) is cutting jobs as it looks to rightsize the corporation and return to profitability.

TechCrunch confirmed an earlier reports that BlackBerry was letting people go from its Waterloo and Sunrise, Fla., locations.

One report said BlackBerry was axing 75 positions at the Florida facility, and the other said that the company is cutting 35 percent of its workforce at its Waterloo headquarters.

While BlackBerry confirmed it was reducing headcount, the company did not affirm the specific number of employees being let go.

Shares of BlackBerry are down over 3 percent Friday.

Below is a statement from the company:

"As BlackBerry continues to execute its turnaround plan, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce. This means finding new ways to enable us to capitalize on growth opportunities, while driving toward sustainable profitability across all parts of our business. As a result, approximately 200 employees have been impacted in Canada and Florida. It also means that BlackBerry is actively recruiting in those areas of our business that will drive growth. For those employees that have recently left the company, we know that they have worked hard on behalf of our company and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions."
