Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) is pressuring Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) shares today following the launch of its new, highly-competitive tablet line.
According to an earlier release, Barnes & Noble launched its NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ tablets, which boast 7- and 9-inch screens ,respectively.
The 7-inch model is said to have a stunning HD display, which reports today back up. At 1440 x 900-pixels, the NOOK HD's display packs 243 pixels per inch (ppi). By comparison, the Kindle Fire HD boasts just 216 ppi. But, resolution isn't the only good part of the device.
Due to new technology powering the display --which took nine months to develop, according to the company -- the NOOK HD battery (which is 4050 mAh) can run HD video playback for about 9 hours, according to BoyGeniusReport.
So, whether the new device will lift Barnes & Noble out of the doldrums is up in the air. At over 3 million digital books and expanding content and apps library, the ecosystem is there. But, you can have a class-leading item on the market and still end up losing simply because of initial sentiment.
Shares of Barnes & Noble are moving off of lows while Amazon is down 1.4 percent.
