August Auto Sales Mixed: Ford, Toyota, Honda Sales Rise; GM, Chrysler, Nissan Sales Fall
Automakers are releasing their retail sales numbers for the month of August today. Although the major players benefited from the 'Cash for Clunkers' program, results for the last month of summer are coming in somewhat mixed:
- Ford (NYSE: F) reported a 17% rise in monthly sales, from 155,177 vehicles last year to 181,826 units this year.
- GM sales fell 20% to 246,479 units.
- Toyota (NYSE: TM) saw August sales increase 6.4% from last year, benefiting substantial from the 'Clunkers' program.
- Chrysler issued a 15% decline in its monthly auto sales.
- Honda (NYSE: HMC) reported a sales increase of 9.9% for the month. Units totaled 161,439 autos.
- Nissan (OTC: NSANY) auto sales fell 2.9% during August, from 108,493 last year to 105,312 in '09.
- BMW saw sales fall 21.3% in the US, with August marking its best month of sales so far this year.
- Hyundai Motor America (OTC: HYMLF) reported a 47% rise in August sales, marking an all-time sales record on a month-to-month basis.
