Has the deal between China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) done well for either side?
Some might argue that it has. Barron's noted Friday that China Mobile reported adding 14.2 million new 3G subscribers in January, which is a 7.4 percent gain from December. It would be the fastest growth for the segment since last August and largest 3G subscriber addition ever.
At the end of January, China Mobile has 772 million overall wireless subs and 206 million 3G subs (or 62 and 47 percent of the market in each category).
What isn't clear is the catalyst. Apple and China Mobile's initial agreement called for carriage of the iPhone 5c and 5s, and the press release at the time said the devices would support China Mobiles 4G/TD-LTE and 3G/TD-SCDMA networks.
So, maybe Apple did perform a little out-of-the-gate magic?
