Apple (AAPL) Looks for Trifecta with Upcoming China Mobile (CHA) Deal

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is now in talks with China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) about having the carrier add Apple's iPhone to its lineup, a move which was largely expected.

Comments were made by China Mobile's Chairman Xi Guohua at a shareholder meeting Wednesday.

China Mobile is the largest wireless carrier in the world with some 650 million subscribers. By contrast, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) only have about 100 million subs each (both don't come close to cracking the top 10 largest carriers in the world, according to market data).

Though China Mobile boasts an impressive size, only a small portion of its total subs utilize a smartphone. The carrier is looking to stem an exodus of subs with the introduction of a fourth-generation (4G) wireless network.

Apple's iPhone is currently offered by China Unicom (NYSE: CHU) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA). China Telecom just began selling the iPhone last March.

The move is great for Apple, which, as noted with its latest quarterly report, is turning more Chinese by the day.

Shares are indicated for a higher open Wednesday.
