Apple (AAPL) iPhone Shipments Could Surpass 230M Units in 2015

May 22, 2015 11:21 AM EDT

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) should see continued robust growth in its iPhone segment this year as iPhone 6/6+ sales remain strong and as the company grids to release an updated version later in 2015.

TrendForce recently speculated that total iPhone shipments could reach 230 million units or more this year, a 20 percent gain over 2014. The firm sees the next-generation iPhone accounting for over 35 percent of shipments for the year.

Shipments of the next-generation iPhone -- which will have either a 4.7- or 5.5-inch display -- should number 24 million units in Q315, moving to over 50 million for Q415.

TrendForce sees the biggest upgrade for the next iPhone is the mobile DRAM upgrade from LPDDR3 to LPDDR4, while the total DRAM capacity will double to 2-GB.

Additionally, the next iPhone will have a smaller LED back light package, which will lead to a smaller form factor. TrendForce sees the size moving from 0.6t (3.0 x 0.85 x 0.6mm) to 0.4t (3.0 x 0.85 x 0.4mm).
