Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is looking to make more patent acquisitions as it seeks to gain footing against rivals Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL).
According to Reuters, Amazon has tapped an executive search firm in finding an intellectual property "Acquisition and Investment Leader." The sole purpose would be to seek out and evaluate intellectual property acquisition and licensing opportunities, according to the description.
With Amazon looking to update its Kindle Fire tablet and potentially launching a branded smartphone in the future, gaining patent defenses now makes sense for the e-Commerce giant. Generally, it produces its own patents in the case of e-commerce, though those don't readily transfer over to mobile applications.
In addition to protecting the company against lawsuits before they happen, Amazon could wield the IP as incentive in joint ventures and partnerships.
Amazon was part of the consortium which acquired Nortel Networks patents last year in a $4.5 billion deal.
Shares of Amazon are off about 1 percent on the session Wednesday.
