Amazon.com (AMZN) Goes to Apple's (AAPL) Hometown for Wireless Testing

August 23, 2013 7:14 AM EDT
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) has been rumored in the past to mull construction of a branded mobile phone, but the company might also have plans above and beyond that.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon has tested its own wireless network which may allow customers to connected directly to that network. Aside from a mobile phone, certain Kindle devices offered by the company have been given free 3G connectivity for quickly downloading books purchased from the Kindle store.

The wireless network was tested in Cupertino, California, better known as the home of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Testing also used spectrum controlled by satellite company Globalstar (Nasdaq: GSAT).

It's not clear whether Amazon is still testing the wireless network, sources said.

Amazon isn't the only company looking to go more into wireless; Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has bid on spectrum in the past and has been building a fiber Internet network in around 17 U.S. cities.

Shares of Amazon are up in early trading Friday.
