How does Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) keep killing its competitors? It might seem complicated, but there's one key way it leaves competitors in its dust: availability.

The topic was touched on with Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) event Wednesday, when it revealed the next Lumia series. Most likely, the element will also be re-hashed following Amazon.com's (Nasdaq: AMZN) event in LA today (which is slated to start at 1:30pm EDT).

At Amazon's event, many expect to see a new Kindle Fire tablet device unveiled. However, The Verge said it has all but been confirmed that Amazon will also show off a new smartphone. But, here's the kick that The Verge points out: Amazon's smartphone is "largely unfinished."

Apple is known for announcing a device and then, at the very least, taking pre-orders with a released date also set. It's called being ready, as Apple knows that the lions share of sales happen when interest is fresh. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster commented Wednesday that he expects opening weekend sales of Apple's new iPhone to hit 6 million to 10 million units. Munster didn't say he expects fifth weekend sales to beat that mark, because interest is going to die off then.

Being ready. Taking pre-orders. Both are a concept that Nokia, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), and, possibly, Amazon better pick up on if any of them have ambition to knock Apple off the "Smartphone Winner" podium.

Shares of Amazon are up 1.7 percent Thursday. Apple is also higher on the session.
