Actuate and St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Awarded BeyeNETWORK's 2009 'Vision Award' for Performance Management

November 11, 2009 7:00 AM EST

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTU), the people behind BIRT(TM), today announced that it and St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) have been named winners of the prestigious BeyeNETWORK 2009 "Vision Award for Business Impact" in the Performance Management category.

STEGH and Actuate won the award for an Actuate BIRT Performance Scorecard based application that helps STEGH to align, standardize and measure performance based upon the same data that supports the organization's mission to provide comprehensive 24 hour coverage in Medicine, Surgery, OB, Pediatrics, Anesthesia, Emergency and Family Medicine. Because of the Actuate's ability to extend BIRT content into layouts within BIRT Performance Scorecard, the hospital was able to extend its BIRT-based development to efficiently bridge strategic and operational Performance Management.

"We are excited to be honored with the BeyeNETWORK 2009 'Vision Award for Business Impact,'" said Malcolm Hopkins, vice president, corporate services at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital. "Before utilizing BIRT Performance Scorecard, STEGH was measuring performance to varying degrees with different processes for different departments or initiatives. Recognizing the need for improvement, STEGH implemented one data repository and initiated open discussion to facilitate better understanding of the overall results."

STEGH adopted its groundbreaking approach to Performance Management as it sought to look beyond merely solving the business challenge at hand, but also to meet the hospital's four key goals which are becoming an employer of choice by keeping employees better-informed, happier and at work with fewer sick days, to better engage the patient community with continual measures and tracking of patient satisfaction, both while better managing internal hospital initiatives, strengthening current and forging new partnerships and targeting a bold fiscal strategy.

"In today's challenging macroeconomic environment, it is important that an organization's Performance Management solution allows all users to have easy access to the scores and trends related to their tactical strategies as well as the ability to track specific benchmarks, goals and information," said Mary Jo Nott, executive editor, BeyeNETWORK. "With Actuate, STEGH solved its Performance Management challenge and, in addition, realized significant cost savings and increased quality control. We are pleased to recognize both companies with a 2009 Vision Award for Business Impact."

Specific to its Performance Management strategy STEGH has implemented key metrics that pertain to the organization's four key goals that are tracked in BIRT Performance Scorecard and shared monthly with hospital management. This enabled the organization to not only overcome their fiscal challenges, but also allowed for employee and patient satisfaction to grow along with hospital efficiency. STEGH utilized key metrics to help ensure consistent interpretation across the organization.

"We are pleased to be honored alongside St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital by BeyeNETWORK," said Nobby Akiha, senior vice president, marketing, Actuate. "STEGH is showing great foresight in adopting best-of-breed solutions to drive performance management for cost savings, implementing and tracking actionable measures and therefore is improving the quality of care it gives."
