Kroger (NYSE: KR) is seeking to acquire the Fresh Market (Nasdaq: TFM) and is in the second round of an auction process that has also attracted private equity firms Apollo Global (NYSE: APO), KKR (NYSE: KKR), and TGP Capital, according to Reuters, citing sources on the information.
Active amid the chatter includes Sprouts Farmers Market (Nasdaq: SFM) and Whole Foods (NYSE: WFM).
This is not the first time takeover rumors have surfaced about the natural food grocer. In October, reports said the company's founder was exploring a bid with the help of private equity firms. Those reports also came from Reuters.
Fresh Market is up over 18 percent, but was up around 23 percent following today's headlines.
