Aetna (NYSE: AET) is near a deal to acquire Humana (NYSE: HUM), the Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday. A deal could be inked as soon as Thursday night. Price could not be learned but recent speculation suggested a price north of $200/share.
Bloomberg reported the deal is worth about $34 billion, or about $230 per share to Humana.
Speculation in the healthcare space has been rampant, with Anthem (NYSE: ANTM) looking to acquire Cigna Corp. (NYSE: CI) and Cigna interested in Humana. Anthem may have also looked at Aetna. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) may also get involved in the merger frenzy, although antitrust concerns may keep them sidelined.
