PC-maker Dell is in talks to merge with EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), the Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday.
It is unclear if the two are discussing a full or partial takeover of EMC, the Journal reported.
EMC has been under pressure from shareholders to increase shareholder value via a strategic deal. One such thought was a 'downstream' merger by child-company VMware (NYSE: VMW), which was spun-off from and is largely owned by EMC. However, that type of deal has been downplayed by EMC management.
A deal with Dell would likely be viewed positively by EMC shareholders.
Dell was taken private by CEO Michael Dell in 2013.
