Shares of Dobson Communications (Nasdaq: DCEL) are higher in pre-open action Monday on reports from the Wall Street Journal the company has hired Morgan Stanley to explore strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company.
Dobson markets wireless services in rural and suburban areas under the Cellular One brand, serving approximately 1.7 million subscribers.
Takeover rumors have surrounded Dobson and other rural carriers since the acquisition of Alltel (NYSE: AT) in May. Other carriers mentioned in the rumor mill include: Centennial Communications (Nasdaq: CYCL), Rural Cellular (Nasdaq: RCCC) and United States Cellular (NYSE: USM).
