RIM (Nasdaq: RIMM) lowered its second-quarter PlayBook sales target from about 2.4 million to 800,000-900,000 due to a much slower launch than originally expected, reports Digitimes.
Many investors are still optimistic about models with 3G, LTE and WiMAX support, which are planned to launch following the third quarter. They believe PlayBook sales will begin picking up after these models are released.
Another company which lowered its tablet PC shipment expectations is Acer, which cut production from 5-7 million to 2.5-3 million. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is forecast to sell 8-10 million iPads.
On a monthly basis, Motorola's (NYSE: MMI) Xoom, Acer's Iconia, Asustek's Eee Pad Transformer and RIM's PlayBook average about 100,000-200,000 units. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is set to launch its TouchPad in early July.
