Discovery (DISCA) Poised to Be the Most Entertaining TV Network Ever, Oprah Will Make Sure of That - Barron's

November 23, 2009 10:25 AM EST

A Barron's article reports that Discovery Communications (NASDAQ: DISCA) will have one of the most entertaining line-ups on TV with the new acquisition of Oprah Winfrey and her Network, OWN. The programming is expected to begin in early 2011, so set your DVR's now.

Discovery generally broadcasts such family favorites as Jon and Kate Plus 8, Little People, Big World, Cake Boss, and Deadliest Catch.

Discovery recently revised their revenue expectations for 2009, now seeing $3.45 - $3.50 billion. The consensus estimate is $3.49 billion.

The common stock is currently trading about 10.5 EBITDA estimates from Gabelli & Co. Estimates also have a price target at $38 - $39 from several firms. The stock is at $32.38 in early-morning trading. Much of the brunt behind the estimates is an increased advertising revenue outlook, stronger ratings, and tighter cost controls.

Discovery has also reduced their debt through a combination of increased earnings and proceeds from a $500 million note offering made three months ago.

The plan is to relaunch Discovery Health as the Oprah Winfrey Network. Discovery has paid $100 million through 2011, and will only see the money returned if the network is profitable.
