August preliminary truck tonnage increased 2.1% year-over-year and declined 0.9% month-over-month, according to Deutsche Bank, citing the American Trucking Associations. This was a deceleration from up 4.0% year-over-year in July.

"On a two-year stacked basis, SA truck tonnage was up 5.6% y/y, which was also a deceleration from up 7.2% in July. Sequentially, SA truck tonnage declined 0.9% m/m from a strong July. We expect truck tonnage to grow in H2 given solid housing construction, automotive production, and job growth though industrial production and elevated inventories remain potential headwinds," said analyst Robert Salmon.
