Consumer Sentiment Hits 5-year High Less than Month before Presidential Election

Good times are just around the corner. At least, that is what consumers in the U.S. are anticipating. According to October preliminary data from Reuters/UofM, consumers are more optimistic now than they have been in 5 years.

The index on consumer sentiment showed a reading of 83.1, up from 78.3 the month before. This was the highest level since September 2007.

"What changed was how (consumers) evaluated economic conditions," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement. "Economic conditions during the year ahead were expected to be 'good' by more consumers, and more consumers expected 'good' economic times over the next five years."

After recent, positive, though controversial, jobs data, healthy consumer sentiment is another good sign for the Obama camp. Considering the polling data, which continues to predict a very tight presidential race, positive consumer sentiment is very likely a welcomed bit of news for the President.
