Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) said Thursday that its profit in the second quarter fell 5 percent, due mostly to higher taxes and the weakness in the euro, but the company managed to come in ahead of Wall Street expectations.
The biotechnology company reported second-quarter earnings of $1.2 billion, down from almost $1.3 billion last year, while results remained flat at $1.25 per share.
Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.38 per share in the quarter, 8 cents better than the analyst estimate of $1.30 per share.
Revenue for Amgen rose 2 percent in the three month period ended June 30 to $3.8 billion from $3.7 billion last year, and just ahead of the market consensus of $3.74 billion.
Sales of the company’s anemia drug Aranesp fell 13 percent in the period to $603 million, while its other anemia drug Epogen saw sales rise 3 percent to $657 million.
"We delivered a solid quarter," said Kevin Sharer, chairman & CEO. "We are in the process of launching Prolia worldwide and look forward to working with global regulatory authorities to gain approval for denosumab in patients with advanced cancer."
Looking forward, the company reaffirmed its outlook for full-year earnings to be in the range of $5.05 to $5.25 per share, but the company said that its revenue for 2010 would likely be hampered by the weak euro. Amgen said that its sales for the full year would likely fall below $15.1 billion, down from a previous forecast in the range of $15.1 billion to $15.5 billion.
Shares of Amgen are down 2 cents to $53.35 in extended trade Thursday, after falling 39 cents during regular market movement.
