Notable ETF Movers of the Day 11/20: (XHB) Higher; (KOL) (SMH) Lower

Gainers:
SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) gained 2 percent to 25.9. The move in homebuilding stocks came in response October data on housing starts. At 894,000 starts handlely beat economist estimates of 840,000. The numbers showed housing starts grew at their fastest rate in 4 years, adding fuel to recovery hopes. Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR) posted 52-week highs and was among today’s winners. With a 4 percent weighting, Whirlpool Corp. (WHR) is the top holding in XHB.
Decliners:
Market Vectors Coal ETF (NYSE: KOL) declined 1.75 percent to 23.3. It was another painful day in the coal space, with shares of Walter Energy, Inc. (NYSE: WLT) declining 5 percent and shares of Arch Coal Inc. (NYSE: ACI) shedding a similar amount. KOL is lower by 31 percent so far this year, and few investors are optimistic about the industry.
Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH) declined 1.2 percent to 30.6. Shares of Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), the largest chipmaker in the world, declined 4 percent. Yesterday Intel stock reacted violently to an announcement that it was beginning a search to replacement CEO Paul Otellini, who plans to retire in May. In unrelated news, ongoing secular weakness in PCs has cast a pall on the industry.
