Gainers:
SPDR S&P Biotech (NYSE: XBI) gained 2.1 percent to 84.4. Shares of Affymax, Inc. (Nasdaq: AFFY), the ETF’s largest holding, gained 9 percent following the company's Q3 earnings report. Affymax has a 3.5 percent weighting in XBI. Shares of Medivation (Nasdaq: MDVN) also performed well, gained 3.75 percent.
Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH) gained 1 percent to 31.50. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) gained 3.80 percent. Considering the chip maker's rather large decline this year, today's gain appear somewhat paltry. Yesterday Goldman put out a note that said there is a growing chance AMD could be a takeover target. Analysts say the probability of a takeover is 15 to 30 percent.
Decliners:
SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) declined 1 percent to 25.50. Homebuilders have been a top performing sector this year so the latest pullback could simply be a round of profit taking. Shares of Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL) declined 2.25 percent today, on general sector weakness.
