Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.33 percent to $44.40. The CBOE VIX near-term index is 4 percent better on the day, as financials are showing weakness on JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM) results as CEO Jamie Dimon still called the economic environment "challenging." Otherwise, initial jobless claims came in at 404,000 last week, slightly below the 406,000 expected, but not enough to spur a movement.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 0.51 percent to $29.82. Semis could be seeing some upside as Gartner reported late Wednesday that third-quarter PC sales still continue to be robust, amid a year-over-year slow down. Altera Corp. (Nasdaq: ALTR) is the only notable blemish on the day, down 0.5 percent as Baird downgraded it to Neutral.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) up 0.37 percent to $21.84. The U.S. dollar is on the rise today as financials take center stage with JPMorgan's earnings. Despite the win, others wonder how investment banking losses will pan out for the rest of the sector.

Receders

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.55 percent to $32.41. Crude inventories rose 1.34 million barrels last week, much larger than the 200,000 drop expected by the Street. Crude November contracts are $1.52 lower to $84.05 per barrel on the Comex.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 3.49 percent to $12.30. Again, reacting to JPMorgan earnings. JPMorgan shares are trading 5.9 percent lower on the session amid the third-quarter beat, as earnings showed a drop and the tone suggested a challenging economic environment.

  • iShares MSCI Brazil Index (NYSE: EWZ) down 2.14 percent to $57.08. Brazil reacting to U.S. economic data and other news Thursday. Brazil derives much of its GDP from commodities, and lower crude demand on a waning recovery will hamper those results.
