Notable ETF Movers of the Day 09/23: (XRT) (UNG) (SMH) Higher; (GLD) (UUP) (XLE) Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 2.00 percent to $46.96. Retailers are making a bounce following a lagely negative week in the markets. The move is being led higher today by AnnTaylor Stores Corp. (NYSE: ANN), which is up 5.9 percent on the session.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 0.32 percent to $9.31. Reports today have natural gas rising as the South is experiencing a heat wave across the region. Temps are expected to be above normal through October 2nd, according to Bloomberg data. Nat gas October contracts are up $0.024 to $3.729 on the Comex, a slight jump from yesterday.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.85 percent ti $29.66. The chip ETF is getting a boost from Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) today, which is up 2.9 percent, as Caris & Co. upgraded the stock from Average to Above Average, its price target raised from $28 to $30.


Receders

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 4.31 percent to $161.76. Gold is trading lower as traders may be looking to cover losses in other assets Friday. With a dimmer global economic growth forecast in the works, cash may be king for a while, but margin calls following a drastic decline Thursday may also be prompting the move. Gold December contracts, the most actively traded, are $69 lower to $1672.7 on the Comex, about 13 percent below recent highs.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.31 percent to $22.19. The euro is catching a bid versus the dollar as the G-20 said it would pledge to act in order to stabilize the economy. The U.S. dollar has been up much of the week as the safe have bet against market volatility.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE)down 0.54 percent to $59.02. Energy stocks are showing some weakness as hurricane season is coming to a close. The move today is led by Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL) which is 1 percent lower Friday.
