Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/27: SPY, XHB, XLE Higher; UNG, VXX, FXY Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 0.90% to $106.18. After being in the red early today, markets are shaping up and hanging in the green at midday. Stocks are getting a boost from Fed Chief Bernanke's Jackson Hole speech, which, in part, says that the Fed will do more to help the economy. The revised GDP number is also in play today, coming in at 1.6%, from the estimate of 1.4%, but down from 2.4% prior.

  • SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) up 2.05% to $14.43. Investors and traders have been buying into homebuilder stocks all week, despite disappointing housing and foreclosure data. Low mortgage rates and today's economic data may pique interest in the shares even further.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 1.77% to $51.68. Energy stocks seeing a boost with the overall market, as the Fed vows to help the U.S. economy and GDP is revised lower, but now as low as expected. October oil contracts are trading $0.45 higher today to $73.81/barrel.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 2.71% to $6.28. Nat gas prices are at an 11-month low, according to the Wall Street Journal, on lack of storm systems aiming to disrupt gas production in the Gulf of Mexico and Carribbean, as well as cooler temps throughout the U.S. Hurrican Danielle is expected to head north, and tropical storm Earl is expected to pass northeast of the Carribbean. There is a tropical storm formation behind Earl which has a 70% chance of successful formation.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 3.23% to $22.15. The CBOE VIX is lower today as investors are reacting to Ben Bernanke's Jackson Hole speech, as well as heightened M&A action in the tech sector.

  • CurrencyShares Japanese Yen Trust (NYSE: FXY) down 0.66% to $116.51. Lower today as Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan is expected to meet with the press later today to discuss steps to curb the recent surge in the yen and efforts to boost the economy overall.
