Gainers

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 3.24% to $22.30. "Show me the jobs!" traders scream...to no avail. Nonfarm payrolls today showed a 131,000 decrease, down from the consensus of a 87,000 loss, but up from a 221K loss in June. The unemployment rate held firm at 9.5%, and hourly earnings and the average workweek both increased marginally, 0.2% and 34.2, respectively.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 1.09% to $118.25. Investors making their way back into the yellow gold after jobs reports came up short today, Gold is above the $1200/ounce mark again today, and looks as though it may be able to retain the level. A weak dollar is helping.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.87% to $132.60. The euro is gaining versus the U.S. dollar today on weaker economic data from the U.S. as nonfarm payrolls fall short of views.

Receders

  • SPDRs (NYSE: SPY) down 1.3% to $111.31. Markets dip, dip, dipping today as not much news is offsetting sour employment data today. PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQQ) is also down 1.35% to $46.20, as indices are back down after trying to make a move back into the green earlier in the morning.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 2.01% to $55.18. BP plc (NYSE: BP) is taking a bit of a victory lap today after announcing that they have cemented the Gulf of Mexico well shut. BP is trading 0.5% higher midday. Others in the energy sector, however, are reacting to a potential slowdown in the economy as nonfarm payrolls fell short of expectations. Anadarko (NYSE: APC) is leading the pack, down 3.6% today.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) down 1.9% to $14.62. The ETF is lower today as AIG (NYSE: AIG) reported a profit for their second quarter, excluding a one-time charge. Otherwise, overall nonfarm payroll data is affecting broader markets. Some say it smells of a double-dip on the horizon, others respectfully disagree.
