Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/07: (XRT) (USO) (SMH) Higher; (UNG) (TAN) (VXX) Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 2.31 percent to $55.92. Retailers are ripping today, led by strong comps from Target (NYSE: TGT) and Kohl's (NYSE: KSS).

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 1.74 percent to $38.55. Crude moving higher today, following economic data. EIA reported that stockpiles fell by 900 thousand to 358.6 million barrels last week, continuing the 4.4 million barrel drop seen the prior week. Further, ADP reported the addition of 157 thousand jobs, beating the Street's view calling for additions of 70 thousand.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.80 percent to $35.00. The ETF is getting a little help from KLA-Tencor (Nasdaq: KLAC), which is up 4.4 percent on the session as UBS upgraded to Buy today. Also, overall positive jobs numbers, ahead of Friday's nonfarm payroll report, means more buying of electronics equipment.


Receders

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 2.25 percent to $10.42. EIA data shows a 95 billion cubic foot increase in stockpiles, compared with Bloomberg estimates looking for an 81 bcf increase.

  • Claymore/MAC Global Solar Index (NYSE: TAN) down 0.56 percent to $7.05. Jefferies downgraded JA Solar (Nasdaq: JASO), MEMC Electronic (NYSE: WFR), Canadian Solar (Nasdaq: CSIQ), and Hanwha Solar (Nasdaq: HSOL) today...all bigger names in the solar sector.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.85 percent to $20.09. The CBOE VIX is trading about 3 percent lower today on positive economic news out of the U.S. as well as strong retail sales.
