Notable ETF Movers of the Day 05/19: (EWA) (FXE) Higher; (EWJ) (SMH) (UNG) Lower

Gainers

  • iShares MSCI Australia Index (NYSE: EWA) up 0.41 percent to $26.76. Australian stocks rebounding today on optimism for increasing commodities prices. The ASX closed 1.7 percent higher to 4,756.4.

  • CurrencyShares Euro Trust (NYSE: FXE) up 0.13 percent to $142.03. The euro is edging higher today, but continuing fears over Greek debt is keeping the move in check. Buying comes from hedge funds and the Middle East, but ECB head Trichet commented that the ECB would not accept Greek bonds as collateral in the event of a restructuring, according to Reuters. The euro is up just 0.0004 to 1.4255 against the dollar.

  • iShares MSCI Japan Index (NYSE: EWJ) down 1.80 percent to $10.09. Japan's economy shrunk 3.7 percent in the first quarter, on an annualized basis, nearly double the 2 percent drop predicted by economists. Prior to the March 11th earthquake, economists had predicted a 1.73 percent GDP growth in the first quarter.

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) down 1.59 percent to $35.86. Goldman Sachs downgraded both KLA-Tencor (Nasdaq: KLAC) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) to Sell today, with KLA down about 4.7 percent and Intel down just 2 percent.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.29 percent to $10.69. Natural gas futures falling as EIA reported stores increased 92 billion cubic feet, compared to the 89 bcf estimated by Dow Jones. The number eclipses the five-year average increased of 91 bcf. June contracts are $0.060 lower to $4.138 per mmBtu on the Comex.
