Notable ETF Movers of the Day 02/19: (XRT) (PBW) Higher; (SLV) Lower

February 19, 2013 2:29 PM EST
Gainers:

SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSE: XRT) gained 1.6 percent to 68.55. Much of the action took place in the office supply space, with shares of Office Max (NYSE: OMX), Office Depot (NYSE: ODP), and Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) all moving higher. The spike is in response to rumors of an Office Max / Office Depot merger. In separate news, Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) moved higher following a number of developments including an analyst upgrade. On Friday the retailer said it would continue in-store and online price matching in an effort defend against online competitors.

PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (NYSE: PBW) gained 1.5 percent to 4.75. Standout stocks included Power-One Inc. (Nasdaq: PWER) and Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA). This morning Power-one was upgraded by analysts at Raymond James. Analysts also called the solar company the “highest-quality public company in the space." Rearding Tesla, its Model S was largely vindicated following a negative New York Times article last weekend.

Decliners:

iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) declined 1.3 percent to 28.5. Precious metals plunged on Friday after gold broke through key technical levels. That trend continued with silver descending below $29.50 per ounce and gold hovering at just above $1600 per ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ETF (NYSE: GLD) declined by 0.3 percent.
