Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/26: DIA, XHB, EWY Higher; VXX, GLD, UNG Lower

Gainers

  • SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) up 0.14% to $119.66. The Dow Jones Indsutrial Average reached above the 12,000 milestone for the first time since June 2008 today.

  • SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB) up 2.16% to $18.35. The selling of new houses increased to 329,000 in December, a 17.5% sequential gain. The consensus was looking for a more modest 300,000. USG Corp. (NYSE: USG) is also leading the ETF today, up about 6.2% today, following a mixed
    fourth quarter
    2010 earnings report today.

  • iShares MSCI South Korea Index (NYSE: EWY) up 1.99% to $62.89. The Bank of Korea said that South Korea's economy grew past expectation in Q410, marking the eigth consecutive quarter of growth in the nation. GDO increased 0.5$, compared to the consensus of 0.4%.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.15% to $30.52. Lower today on stronger new home sales, and overall positive sentiment following President Obama's State of the Union address last night.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 0.59% to $129.33. Has the gold bubble burst so soon? Following Obama's SOTU speech and stronger economic data, investors are finding their hunger for a little more risk in the equities markets. Gold may move in the other direction later on today, as the FOMC releases their rate decision. Rates are largely expected to stay flat at 0 - 0.25% and no changes are expected for QE2. February 11 contracts are down $7.6/ounce to $1,324.7/ounce today, still hovering around the $1,320/ounce support level some analysts are calling for.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 1.23% to $6.01. The ETF is continuing lower, down about 6.9% over the last three sessions, as forecasts are still calling for milder weather heading into February. March 11 contracts are down $0.06/mmBtu to $4.430/mmBtu, a 1.3% drop.
