A home buyer poll releases by TD Bank today says that aspirations of homeownership are still very much alive despite the collapse in housing and economic challenges faced by Americans.

84 percent of today's younger renting generation, ages 18 through 34, responded that they intend to buy a home. 50 percent of consumers polled say homeownership is a vital component to defining the American Dream, and 59 percent have feelings of pride and excitement regarding first-time home buying.

Last week housing starts for the month of April were reported up 2.6% to 717,000, higher than analyst estimates.

SPDR S&P Homebuilders (NYSE: XHB), which tracks equities in the homebuilding sub-industry portion of the S&P Total Markets Index, is down 6.4 percent in the past 5 days, but is still up over 13 percent year-to-date.
