U.S. Department of Energy Reports High Marks for Philips LED-based Undercabinet Light

November 18, 2008 11:00 AM EST

BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Highlighting the progress and viability of LED sources for residential use, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the results of its latest GATEWAY Demonstration - finding that Philips eW Profile Powercore generates significant energy savings, improved illuminance uniformity and positive user feedback.

The independent test was conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as part of the DOE's GATEWAY Demonstration program, which provides real-world data on the performance and cost-effectiveness of LED products in various commercial and residential applications. eW Profile Powercore, an LED-based undercabinet fixture, was installed in two homes for assessment. According to the report, the fixture was able to meet or exceed the task lighting levels required by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, while at the same time cutting energy use by up to 90% as compared to halogen sources in the same application.

Survey participants also cited the following favorable attributes of eW Profile Powercore:

-- The ability to more closely approximate the "sparkle" of halogen sources as compared to fluorescent, which enhances the look of counter and backsplash materials

-- More uniform illumination vs. halogen sources

-- The ability to operate without radiating heat

-- Positive impact on overall visibility and appearance of the illuminated surface

"We're very pleased with the results of this demonstration, which show that LED sources deliver both the quality of light and efficiency that are important to builders," said Tom Hamilton, Product Marketing Manager, Philips Color Kinetics. "Independent testing programs like GATEWAY are essential to the growth and adoption of LED lighting, in part because they hold manufacturers accountable for their claims. We use a number of internal and external testing procedures to ensure that our products deliver to expectations."

Launched in March, eW Profile Powercore extends the inherent benefits of LED sources to common undercabinet and display lighting applications. The fixture directly accepts line voltage for simple installation, and is compatible with commercially available ELV-type line voltage dimmers - making it easily adaptable to existing lighting environments. It consumes just 6 watts of energy per foot and can support a run of up to 50 feet on a single circuit. At 7/8 inch thick and 1 1/2 inches wide, the fixture is easily and discretely installed to illuminate work surfaces in both commercial and residential settings. It is available in 11-inch, 21-inch, and 41-inch installed lengths and in color temperatures of 2700K and 4000K.
