Amgen (AMGN) to Halt Discounts on Aranesp -NYTimes

August 28, 2008 11:17 AM EDT

The New York Times is reporting that Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN) will halt pricing discounts on several of its drugs: Aranesp, Neulasta and Neupogen. According to sources, critics are saying that Amgen's rebates on its key anemia drug, Aranesp, have caused overuse of the product "at a time of mounting concerns about the product’s safety."

Amgen continues to believe that its pricing policies have not contributed to an overuse of the drug, but, "Nevertheless, we believe these contracting changes, along with other modifications, help to clear up those possible misperceptions."

Amgen has announced that the change will take effect October 1, 2008.

Amgen, Inc., a biotechnology company, engages in the discovery, development, manufacture, and marketing of human therapeutics based on advances in cellular and molecular biology.
