The Dow Gained 36 Points, Nasdaq Added 14

The Dow gained 35.52 points today to close at 13,504.30, the Nasdaq gained 14.27 points to close at 2,561.60 and the S&P 500 added 9.04 points to close at 1,476.71. Today, the Federal Reserve left rates unchanged at 5.25%. Oil gained $0.36 to close at $72.42 per barrel.

Volume was heavy with 4.86 billion shares trading on the NYSE and 2.84 billion on the Nasdaq. Advancers topped Decliners on the NYSE by a margin of 19:14 and 17:13 on the Nasdaq.

In individual stories, Trump Entertainment Resorts (NASDAQ: TRMP) shares jumped 26.5% after reporting a Q2 loss of $0.43 vs. consensus for $0.29 loss. Revenues were $244.2 million vs. $244.5 million consensus. Pope & Talbot, Inc. (NYSE: POP) dropped 60% after the company entered into a forbearance agreement with its senior secured lenders to extend access to liquidity provided by the revolving credit facility under its senior secured credit agreement for six weeks while it continues to explore options to improve its balance sheet. The forbearance agreement requires the Company to expand those efforts during the six-week forbearance period to include soliciting offers to purchase all or substantially all of the Company's assets or equity interests. As Pope & Talbot previously disclosed would be likely, it is out of compliance with a financial covenant in its senior secured credit agreement calculated as of June 30, 2007.
