Target (TGT) Shoppers 'Wu'-ed... Only to Sell Goods on eBay (EBAY)

February 7, 2012 8:57 AM EST
According to WSJ reports Tuesday, lines of shoppers recently waited outside Target (NYSE: TGT) stores for the launch of the Jason Wu women's clothing line. In addition to several lines of "ready-to-wear" clothing, Wu was the designer for Michelle Obama's inaugural gown.

Folks at the front of the line bum-rushed racks, got the choicest of items... and then began selling them on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY). The WSJ said Target was "disappointed" there was so much hoarding of merchandise, according to spokesperson Joshua Thomas.

Surprisingly, Target saw similar demand with its last limited edition line, by fashion house Missoni. Demand was so intense Target's website crashed under all the traffic. "This time," Thomas averred, "the website didn't crash." The WSJ stated this might be due to Target putting buying limits for shoppers on its online store.

The news comes following strong January numbers for Target, which reported a 4.3 percent increase in comps and 5.1 percent gain in revs. Shares are indicated lower Tuesday.
