Is Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) ahead of the curve?
According to a release earlier in the session, RIM and InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) entered an agreement which extended he term of their worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-bearing patent license agreement. The agreement was also amended to add 4G coverage.
Later on this morning, InterDigital filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) against Samsung, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), ZTE, Huawei, and affiliated units, claiming that up to seven of its patents were infringed upon by certain 3G and 4G devices. InterDigital said its looking o bar importation of the devices that infringe patents.
It's unlikely that this complaint will make it to the end, but it's a smart move by RIM heading into the launch of BlackBerry 10 later this month. Basically, it would be one less thing to worry about and alleviate the risk of any device bans into the U.S.
Shares of RIM are up 0.8 percent Wednesday.
