June 2, 2008 7:37 AM EDT

Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: PARD) today issued preliminary safety and efficacy data at the ASCO meeting for several ongoing clinical trials of its picoplatin product:

  • a Phase 2 trial of picoplatin in combination with docetaxel and prednisone demonstrated that picoplatin can be safely administered with full doses of docetaxel. In addition, the prostate specific antigen response rate was 69% in 26 patients evaluable for PSA.
  • a previously unpublished Phase 1 clinical trial of picoplatin and liposomal doxorubicin in patients with advanced solid tumors, including ovarian cancer demonstrated signals of clinical activity and acceptable toxicity with this combination.
  • a randomized Phase 2 clinical trial in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and updated results from an ongoing Phase 1 CRC trial suggested that picoplatin given in combination with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin and oxaliplatin given in combination with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin may have similar anti-tumor activity in metastatic CRC. Poinard said it will present further Phase 1 and 2 data at ASCO.
