Oracle (ORCL), H-P (HPQ) Further Good Ol' McCoy-Hatfield Rivalry in New Suit

June 16, 2011 8:27 AM EDT
Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is suing Orcale (Nasdaq: ORCL) over a chip dispute.

According to Reuters, Hewlett-Packard sent a letter to Oracle last week, sorry, a "formal legal demand," so that Oracle would continue software development for Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) Itanium development.

This recent outburst furthers the distance between the number one PC manufacturer and the number three software developer.

Oracle has said that Hewlett-Packard's claim is "not true," and the suit is "utterly malicious and meritless."

Last year, Oracle hired Hewlett-Packard's marred CEO Mark Hurd as President. The move started the ball rolling for an old-fashioned McCoy versus Hatfield rivalry. Hewlett-Packard brought over then SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) Chief Leo Apotheker as its CEO. Reuters points out that Apotheker was in a bitter battle with Oracle at the time.

Hewlett-Packard is trading 0.4 percent lower ahead of the market, while Oracle is slightly higher.
