Another research firm is confirming that Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone is making strides in the global smartphone arena.

Gartner today said Windows Phone 8 (WP8) worldwide sales to end users rose 123 percent to 8.91 million in Q3, from 3.99 million reported in the same period last year. The number was good enough to boost WP8's market share from 2.3 percent all the way up to 3.6 percent.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android added about 9.3 points of share to 81.9 percent, or device shipments of 205.02 million units.

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS saw shipments rise to 30.3 million, but market share fell from 14.3 percent down to 12.1 percent.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) itself, the largest WP8 vendor, didn't fare too bad itself in the recent quarter. Data points to global shipments of 63.05 million units, from 82.3 million units the prior year. Market share slipped 5.3 points to 13.8 percent.

Samsung was still the shipments leader at 117.05 million units and share of 25.7 percent.
