You've seen the old Apple (Nasdaq: APPL) commercials that featured a younger, hipper techie chatting with an old computer geek. The commercial painted Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) as out-of-date and 'square.' Now Microsoft is trying to make square the new cool.
The change takes place in the most visible image associated with Microsoft, its logo. For the first time in a quarter century, Microsoft updated its corporate logo.
The colors are the same, but gone are the wavy edges. In its place is an image that resembles 4 tiles stacked together. It is only a subtle change, but the effect is rather direct, and what it says about Microsoft might be even more telling. 'Yes,' the Logo appears to say, 'we are square, but we are also cool.'
We will find out if that rings true when Microsoft launches Windows 8 in a few months.
